Pulver inherited the property from hismother, Mary E.Pulver when Mary died on March 13,1913, age 90. Eveline married Isaac Fitzgerald of Hurley, NY on 6 Jan 1912. She told me that Isaac would walk to work from Hurley to Cementon every day (about9 miles). She would meet him on the road, as He walked past Her home in Maldon, and they fell in love. They were married in Saugerties NY. I made several trips to Saugerties with my grandparents. She told such wonderful stories about Her life there. I think that She skipped the bad parts. They moved back to Torrington CT about 1918. Isaac lost his sight when I was 5. I used to take grandpa by the hand and we would walk up and down the street. He would tell me stories, some of themvery tall tales, of his adventures in Hurley NY. When the state senta teacher in to teach grandpa how to braid rugs, make baskets and belts, and braille, I covered my eyes and learned too! I thought it was real hot stuff at that young age. I can still do most of it today. The Fitzgeralds were always poor. Isaac worked in the cement plant inCementon for little wages. The one memory that stands out is on one of our trips to Saugerties, we were riding down the road, and grandma looked around, and made Uncle Sidney(her son) stop the car. She got out, and went over and sat on a big rock along side of the road. I went over and sat with her, and She told me that this is where she sat every afternoon to wait for her boyfriend Isaac to walk by on his nine mile hike from work. I went and got grandpa, He was blind by this time, and brought him over to the rock. He sat down and put his arm around my grandma, and said "Look Evie, here are our initials carved into therock". He felt them with his hand. And then He gave my grandma a kiss. I could tell it was something special, both of them had tears running down their faces. Me too! I still do when I think of that special tender moment that I was allowed to share with them. When everybody moved back to Torrington in 1918/19, they brought somebeautiful things with them that were owned by the Ishams. There is a beautiful silver tea service all engraved with the Isham name. My mom gave me a 3x4 foot portrait painted by Jerome Thompson in 1850. I found the letter that Mr. Thompson wrote to the Ishams confirming the deal. It is a scene of the Hudson River, with several people in the foreground. There were several marble top tables. My sister cut one down tomake a coffee table. I also have two beautiful candleabras. They are gold leaf. I used them at my marriage. I will post a photo of the wedding cake. The candle holders are next to it. And I have a christmas cactus that my great great grandmother, Cora Pulver <Cora.Elizabeth.Hubbard.html> brought from the Isham home in Saugerties. I have a tintype photo of this plant on one of the marble tables. This plant dates backto 1850! I still have it. I have given parts to each of my three daughters to carry on the tradition. I also have a beautiful old cut diamond ring. It is the ring that Theodore Isham <Theodore.Isham.html> gaveAugusta Isham <AugustaIshamBio.html> when they were married on November 3rd, 1852. Augusta gave the ring to Her neice Mary E Stillman Pulve<Mary.E.Stillman.html>r, who gave it to Cora Hubbard Pulver <Cora.Elizabeth.Hubbard.html>, who gave it to Sophie Lucy Pulver <Sophie.Lucy.Pulver.html> (Cora's daughter), who gave it to my Grandmother Eveline Pulver Fitzgerald <Eveline.Mary.Pulver.html> (Her older sister), who gave it to my mother, Eveline Mary Pulver Fitzgerald <Eveline.Mary.Pulver.html> (Her daughter), and finally was handed down to me when my Mom died last year. I will have it photographed and put the picture on ourweb page. I (Dominic F. Bruno) graduated high school in 1954. Grandpa Isaac died August 14th of that year. He had a heart attack and fell to the floor. I stayed with Eveline to support Her, and look after Her. But it was really the other way around. She spoiled me rotten. I gave her my pay. Grandma fussed over me all the time. We used to go to the movies, take rides, and go visit old relatives. I wish now I had paid more attention to the conversation. Sundays we would go up to see my parents. Then on the way home we would stop for ice cream. Then we would go home and listen to Jack Benny or something on the radio. She was my bestfriend. All through the fourteen years that my grandpa was blind until He died, Grandma took care of him and never once did I ever hear a single complaint or a harsh word between them. In 1960, Eveline was diagnosed with breast cancer that had spread. They removed the breast, but it was really too late. In early August, grandma fell and broke Her hip. She went to the hospital, and died on August 8, 1961. When we settled the estate, I found a bank book in both our names. Grandma had put the money from my paychecks that She didn'tneed in the bank for me. It has been thirty-seven years since my bestfriend died. I think of Her every day, and still miss Her very much. I have hundreds of postcards dating from 1890 thru 1915 that grandma had collected. Some are in albums, some in boxes. I also found a beautiful scrapbook made by Eveline when She was in high school. It is one of my prized possessions. I have hundreds of letters from the Ishams, Pulvers, Fitzgeralds and others, dating back to 1695. I have read themso many times, that I almost know them by heart.
