amos D. Kenyon 39 years old married Lucy M. Hubbard 38 on September 17, 1869. He was born in North Stonington Connecticut and was the son of James W. and Emma Kenyon. Lucy was born in Cheshire the daughter ofJohn A. and Emma Mason. This was a second marriage for both. Could find nothing his about his first marriage although hers was to Francis A. Hubbard as their daughter Ida Jane Hubbard was born August 21, 1861born Otis listing Francis A. and Lucy M. Hubbard as parents. (Lucy born Cheshire). Francis Hubbard died 1867 in Monterey. Couldn't find death record for Amos Kenyon in NEHGS records. Hope this helps some.

Dennison D. Kenyon, b. 24 Feb 1814, RI, d. ?, m. 4 Mar 1839, RI, to Freegift "Giffey" Briggs, b. 24 Apr 1814, RI. He is believed to be the illigitimate son of Ruth Kenyon, b. 31 Oct 1795, Richmond RI, d. 10 May 1878 also in Richmond and buried in Wood River Cem. Ruth later married 28 Dec 1820 in Hopkinton RI George S. James, b. 1798, Richmond, d.4 Mar 1880, Richmond and bu. at Wood River. There were three childrenof this marriage that I know of: George W. James, b. 1822, Richmond, Susan James, b. 1825, Richmond, and Eliza A. James, b. abt. 1827, Richmond. However, it seems Dennison kept his mother's maiden name, ratherthan change it to his stepfather's surname.
I don't have much info on Dennison's descendants. He had a son, Welcome, b. abt. 1834 who d. at age 19. There was a son, Edwin, b. date unknown, who d. at age 6. Also a Charles Alman Kenyon, b. in June, year unknown, who lived only 6 mo. There was a son, Albert, b. abt. 1842 whod. 20 Dec 1862 at Fredricksburg VA during the war. There was a dau., Sarah Ann, b. 28 Feb 1844 who m. Albert Wright. Also a dau., Dulcina, b. 4 Mar 1850, d. Sep 1860. Finally, there was a son, Silas James Clarke Kenyon, b. 23 Mar 1857 who m. 15 Sep 1877, Maggie James Gibbons, b.16 Mar 1857. The only further info I have is that they had a dau., Mary Esther, b. 7 Ap 1878.
Quite possibly you have details on later generations and some corrections to the above.
For earlier generations, see Howard N. Kenyon's "American Kenyons andEnglish Connections", publ. 1935 by Tuttle Co. of Rutland VT. That book assigns an ID to Ruth of 1623a, but I contend that she should have an ID of 1623b, as Ruth had an older sister, not listed in the book, Thankful Kenyon, b. 1785 who m1. John Boggs and m2. Jonathan Webster Sr. I also doubt the "English Connections" in the book without more substantial evidence.

Iam looking for info on Dennison D Kenyon,in 1880 census he was 65,living with wife Freegift 66 and grandson, Albert D Kenyon. All born in RI.

Daniel, he might be the one. Any additional info would be appreciated(especially date of passing and where he may be buried). Frank & Phebe had a son named Earl (not sure of middle names, Dad may have all that info), which had a son, Earl Jr. who passed in the past couple years or so. His 2nd wife(?) is Margarite and the last address I have forthem is in Harrisville, RI. Thanks for the reply. PK

Dennison D.

CHILDREN:
1. John Kenyon , b 26 Apr 1655; bap 6 May 1655; d 1732; m Anna or Hannah, d before 1712, daughter of Thomas Mumford.
2. James Kenyon , b 4 July 1657; bap 12 July 1657; d 1724; m Ruth Wells.
A. Mary Kenyon , b -----; bap 20 May 1660; d -----. In the burial register of the Oldham Parish Church it shows that on 19 Nov 1665, a child of James Kenyon was buried. No means of identification.
In the record of marriage of James Kenyon (I) it is stated that he was a linen weaver at the time of his marriage and resided in Droylsdenin the parish of Manchester. The record also states that his wife wasa spinster, daughter of John Smith within Glodwick, in the parish of Oldham, and that both James Kenyon (I) and his wife were about the ageof one and twenty years at the date of their marriage. All recorded births of his children show him as a resident of Glodwick after his marriage. There is no record of his death in Rhode Island. The dates of birth and names of his children and grandchildren conclusively prove his identity.
Since there are many grandchildren in this family named Hannah, it ismost likely that such was the name of the Mumford wife of John Kenyon(1) and that the church record entry was of the old style spelling corresponding to the characteristic English pronunciation of Hannah withthe silent
H'.
He may have come to Rhode Island from Mud River (now known as
Brookline') Massachusetts.
The elder son, John, may have followed or preceded the family to America by way of Virginia on the
Thomas and John' from England. The passenger list for the
Thomas and John' bound for Virginia, lists two Kenyons, Jo: and Geo:.The entry
Jo:' is believed to be that of John Kenyon. No current knowledge is known regarding the
Geo:' entry by this author. Some family folklore is available that states that John and George were sent by the eldest son of the family, to find their riches, in the new land of America.

The 1935 book, "American Kenyons and English Connections" by Howard N. Kenyon and published by Tuttle Co. of Rutland VT is available. Images are available on-line at Heritage Quest (which I've viewed) and elsewhere (I think). Custom reprints can be ordered from several publishers that can be found in ads in genealogical magazines. I put a copy inour local library that I had ordered from Tuttle.
The book has proven valuable to many Kenyon researchers, particularlyabout the early family members in colonial Rhode Island. Several researchers (including myself) consider the "English connections" given inthe book as speculation on the author's part and quite likely wrong. The first information about the Rhode Islands are some early court Newport RI court records and the RI tax records for 1687, apparently the only 17th century records that survive that mention the RI Kenyons. The English parish records contain so little information that it is hard to see that they prove much of anything. I know of no records that indicate the parentage of John and James Kenyon, where they were born.I know of no passenger list showing how the RI Kenyons came to America.
The main frustration with "American Kenyons" is that the author failed to document his sources adequately, at least to the level expected by present-day genealogical scholars. The author did do a lot of research, looking at many of the original RI town records and consulting with other researchers, but it is difficult for others to retrace his steps.
The earliest record I've found about Kenyons in Rhode Island is referenced in "Rhode Island General Court of Trials, 1671-1704" by Jane Fletcher Fiske, Boxford MA, 1998. It mentions a court case in March 1684 involving a "James Kinion" (quite likely James Kenyon, ID = 2) and a "Rebeckah Saxbey". He admitted having an out of wedlock child by her. She was found guilty of fornication and fined 26 shillings or, if unable to pay, "severely whipt with fifteen stripes on the naked back". James was not fined, but he was required to pay two shillings per week for the rearing of the child until ordered otherwise. "American Kenyons" lists James' birth as 4 Jul 1657, that he was married to Ruth Wells, and that their first child was a James Kenyon, b. 17 Apr 1693 in S.Kingstown RI. I would guess that James married Ruth Wells after the 1684 court case, but apparently there is no record available today of the marriage to Ruth Wells that would give a date and place of marriage.
If there are other 17th century documents that shed additional details about Rhode Island Kenyons, they are unknown by me.

This book is a collective work of dozens of Kenyon family genealogical researchers, authors, and interested individuals who over the course of three generations and 65 years have made this collection possible.

I am from the 162524 family line and have done work to extend this family genealogical line for this collection. It is from other authors that the addition of more family genealogical line information has beenprovided. Suffice it to be said, without their contribution, this book would have little purpose or meaning above the work which has preceded it.

Throughout the eight years from the time I began collecting family information to show my son, I have had the opportunity to correspond with thousands of Kenyon family members and many families who have Kenyon ancestors. I have not been able to respond to all of them as I wishI could but the information which they have provided, even if incomplete, has been included so that those people who wish to make future use of whatever information I have gathers will have it as available asI can make it. upon my death, all of my collections of correspondencewill be donated to the Kingston, Rhode Island Library. (Currently located across from the entrance to URI on Rt. 2). I tell you this so that it may be simpler in years to come, to find what you may be lookingfor, since I do hope to continue collecting information even after the publishing of this collection.

Before beginning with the earliest sustained generations of Kenyon families in the New World, and in order to better understand more clearly the significance of the dates, places and town records of early Rhode Island and New York descriptions and maps are included as a reference.

:Include enlarged map area of Lanchasire and Manchester area in England

Chronological History of Rhode Island:

* Westerly was set off from the King's Province on 14 May 1669.

* Charlestown was set off from Westerly on 22 Aug 1738.

* Richmond was set off from Charlestown on 18 Aug 1747.

* About half of the Village of Carolina is in the town (township) of Richmond and offices of the town clerks of Richmond and of Charlestownare situated in Carolina. This can tend to lead to great confusion while trying to decipher the land records for earlier period.

* Hopkinton was set off from Westerly in 1757. The Baptist Church at Potter Hill, which was established as early as 1680 (The first Sabbatarian Church), was the one to which many of the early Kenyons belonged. When Hopkinton was set off from Westerly it left those Kenyons who settled in Charlestown with their former land records in Westerly and church records in Hopkinton. In the case of David Kenyon (16), who settled in Richmond while it was still part of Westerly, he had land records in Westerly, town clerk records of births in both Charlestown and Richmond, and his later land and civil records in Richmond.

John Kenyon (1) appears to have come to the colony several months before his family. He testified that he started living on the land of Mr.Killum in 1683. Early in 1684 he had a daughter baptized in Oldham Parish Church, Oldham England. Sarah was the last recorded birth of thisbranch of the Kenyons in England. A family record states that the son, James Kenyon (12), was born 1684-5. This would indicate that his family came to the colony early in 1684. On 6 Sept. 1687, he was taxed 8s-11d in Kingstown, R.I. On 16 Oct. 1712, he deeded his son, John Kenyon (11), 170 acres of land in South Kingstown bounded on one side by land of Peleg Mumford, brother-in-law of John Kenyon (1). No wife signed this or any other deed of John Kenyon (1). This is his first recorded land deed. The record of how he acquired this land may have been destroyed in North Kingstown. He first acquired land in Westerly by deedfrom Joseph Brown, 13 Dec 1709; from Jabez Tucker, 11 Aug. 1711; and from Francis Robinson, 21 Aug 1711. On 26 Nov 1716, he deeded land to his son-in-law, John Webster, in Westerly. In August, 1719, in Westerly, he deeded land to his son James. On 8 Aug 1719, he deeded land in Westerly to his son Samuel. On 10 July 1721, he deeded land in Westerlyto his son Enoch. On 3 Feb. 1724, he deeded land in Westerly to his son Jonathan. On 6 Feb. 1724 he deeded land in Westerly to his son David. On 30 Dec 1724, he again deeded land in Westerly to his son Jonathan.
Mrs. John L. Kenyon (16243b) thought that John Kenyon (1) settled on the Wells place south of Wyoming, then (1905) called the "Clear Water Trout Farm", owned by the American Fish Company. She also thought he was buried on this place. John Larkin Kenyon (116531) Surveyed this property and found in the land records that it was owned by a John Kenyonat a date that would indicate John Kenyon (1). The land dealings and property of this John Kenyon were quite extensive for his time and day. In 1727, he was also listed as a Freeman of Westerly town as "Old Mr. John Kenyon." In 1727, his sons contributed money for the building of the Episcopal Church of Westerly. However, this church was short lived and most of the Kenyons joined the local Baptist Churches. On 8 Aug. 1717, calling himself aged 70 or thereabouts, he testified that in the year 1683 or thereabouts, he went to live on the farm of Stephen Northup of North Kingstown and paid rental to Major Smith in behalf ofa Mr. Killum of Boston and lived there for eight years and Stephen Northup went in when he left it. His will was proved on 12 June,1732 in Westerly. His son Jonathan was named executor. Sons John, James, Enoch, Joseph and David were mentioned in the will. No mention of wife or any other relatives of the family. His inventory of personal property was listed at 180£ 8s. Parents: James KENYON and Ester SMITH.

Spouse: Anna MUMFORD. John *** KENYON and Anna MUMFORD were married in Oldham, Lancishire, England.312 Children were: John *** KENYON.

John *** KENYON was born on 26 Dec 1682 in South Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island.313 He was christened on 26 Dec 1682 in South Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island.314 He was born on 26 Dec 1682 in St Marys, Oldham, Lancashire, England.311 He died in 1735 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island.315 He died in 1735 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island, USA.311 He was also known as John Kenyon.311 IGI gives m. date as Jul 1704 South Kingston, Washington, RI

He was admitted a freeman in 1712. He was deeded land by his father in South Kingstown in 1712, 170 acres. In 1726 he bought the land of John Handson in South Kingstown. In 1731, he sold the land bought of John Handson to Charles Dickinson. He deeded land in Westerly to his son, George, in 1734. In Westerly in 1732, he deeded land to his son, John. In 1734, in Westerly he deeded land to his son Sylvester. When hisdaughter, Elizabeth, married in 1735, it was entered on the town clerk's record that she was the daughter of "John, deceased." He left no record of administration. From the records on file in Richmond, Rhode Island, it appears that the youngest son, Benedict, was born in 1735, which leaves this year as the date of the father's death, unless Benedict was actually born somewhat earlier in the year and the father died in the latter part of 1734. His wife, Elizabeth, died on or before 1747, when her son, Thomas, was appointed administrator of her estate. The orphaned minors lived with their reHe was ad
Mrs. Edward (Susan Card) Barber [grand-daughter of Mary Kenyon (11b)]said John Kenyon (11) and Elizabeth, his wife, were first buried sideby side at the Wood River Church, English fashion, and when the church was repaired they were taken up and buried in the Wood River Cemetery (old part given by Enoch Card-the south part) southwest of the church in the southwest corner of the lot, on a knoll by themselves-near the present turnpike. This part of the Wood River Cemetery has deteriorated and their markers can no longer be seen.
(Told by Mrs. John L. Kenyon (16243b))
Records in Charlestown indicate that John Kenyon (11) was a bridge builder. A number of his grandchildren told Mrs. JLK that he was killed by a binder on a log while crossing Wood River.
