Biographical Summary

Stephen Hopkins was from Hampshire, England. He married his first wife, Mary, and in the parish of Hursley, Hampshire; he and wife Mary had their children Elizabeth, Constance, and Giles all baptized there. It has long been claimed that the Hopkins family was from Wortley, Gloucester, but this was disproven in 1998. For more information on thetrue English origins of Stephen Hopkins, see the "Published Research"section at the bottom of this page.

Stephen Hopkins went with the ship Sea Venture on a voyage to Jamestown, Virginia in 1609 as a minister's clerk, but the ship wrecked in the "Isle of Devils" in the Bermudas. Stranded on an island for ten months, the passengers and crew survived on turtles, birds, and wild pigs. Six months into the castaway, Stephen Hopkins and several others organized a mutiny against the current governor. The mutiny was discovered and Stephen was sentenced to death. However, he pleaded with sorrow and tears. "So penitent he was, and made so much moan, alleging the ruin of his wife and children in this his trespass, as it wrought in the hearts of all the better sorts of the company". He managed to get his sentence commuted.

Eventually the castaways built a small ship and sailed themselves to Jamestown. How long Stephen remained in Jamestown is not known. However, while he was gone, his wife Mary died. She was buried in Hursleyon 9 May 1613, and left behind a probate estate which mentions her children Elizabeth, Constance and Giles.

Stephen was back in England by 1617, when he married Elizabeth Fisher, but apparently had every intention of bringing his family back to Virginia. Their first child, Damaris, was born about 1618. In 1620, Stephen Hopkins brought his wife, and children Constance, Giles, and Damaris on the Mayflower (child Elizabeth apparently had died). Stephenwas a fairly active member of the Pilgrims shortly after arrival, perhaps a result of his being one of the few individuals who had been to Virginia previously. He was a part of all the early exploring missions, and was used almost as an "expert" on Native Americans for the first few contacts. While out exploring, Stephen recognized and identified an Indian deer trap. And when Samoset walked into Plymouth and welcomed the English, he was housed in Stephen Hopkins' house for the night. Stephen was also sent on several of the ambassadorial missions tomeet with the various Indian groups in the region.

Stephen was an assistant to the governor through 1636, and volunteered for the Pequot War of 1637 but was never called to serve. By the late 1630s, however, Stephen began to occasionally run afoul of the Plymouth authorities, as he apparently opened up a shop and served alcohol. In 1636 he got into a fight with John Tisdale and seriously wounded him. In 1637, he was fined for allowing drinking and shuffleboard playing on Sunday. Early the next year he was fined for allowing people to drink excessively in his house: guest William Reynolds was fined, but the others were acquitted. In 1638 he was twice fined for selling beer at twice the actual value, and in 1639 he was fined for selling a looking glass for twice what it would cost if bought in the Bay Colony. Also in 1638, Stephen Hopkins' maidservant got pregnant from Arthur Peach, who was subsequently executed for murdering an Indian. The Plymouth Court ruled he was financially responsible for her and herchild for the next two years (the amount remaining on her term of service). Stephen, in contempt of court, threw Dorothy out of his household and refused to provide for her, so the court committed him to custody. John Holmes stepped in and purchased Dorothy's remaining two years of service from him: agreeing to support her and child.

Stephen died in 1644, and made out a will, asking to be buried near his wife, and naming his surviving children.

HUBBARD GENEALOGISTS

Edwin & Douglas.

I find thou art no less than fame bath bruited thee--William Shakespeare.

DOUGLAS HUBBARD, second son of Henry and Sophia (Whitney) Hubbard, was born in
Pittsfield, Mass., June 21, 1817, and died in New York City Sep 18, 1885. He married March 2,
1837, widow Loretta Watson of Washington, D. C. (d Sep 12, 1877) whose children changed
their name from "Watson" to "Hubbard." DOUGLAS HUBBARD was a scholarly gentleman,
and was the Consulate Clerk at Hobart(*) Town, and Melbourne, Australia, from 1850 to 1860,
when he returned to the United States and was appointed by Secretary Chase to a $1,600 clerkship
in the Second Comptroller's Office, Treasury Department, Washington, D. C. This position he
filled from 1861 to 1878, when he removed to Saint Johnland, Long Island, where he gave his
entire time to studying the science of genealogy and making numerous family "trees" for various
Hubbard deseendants. He was a rapid and tireless worker in the cause, the mainspring of his
efforts being unbounded enthusiasm and a natural aptitude for statistics. His work was confined
chiefly to the descendants of George Hubbard of Wethersfield, Milford, and Guilford, Ct.,
though he traced out some of the branches of the William Hubbard, Ipswich, Mass., branch,
whom he regarded as a possible brother to this George Hubbard. Nothing has arisen since his
time to prove or disprove this theory. In his genealogies he recordedGeorge Hubbard of
Middletown, Ct., as the son of George Hubbard of Wethersfield, Milford and Guilford, Ct.
During his last years he lived in New York City and left a valuable collection of genealogical data,
much of which, unfortunately, fell into unappreciative Hubbard hands.A part of this collection
was a monster "Hubbard Tree" fully thirty-two feet long, and about two feet wide. This is a
marvellous specimen
(*)A corruption of "Hubbard." Parents: Henry HUBBARD and Sophia WHITNEY.

The 37th Regt. Mass Vo. Inf. was composed largely of men from the farwestern counties of Massachusetts and was organized at Camp Briggs, in August and early Sept, 1862. Major Oliver Edwards, commander of the camp, was commisioned colonel Aug 27 and between Aug 30 and Sept. 4the companies were mustered into th United States Service. On Sept.7 the regiment left for Washington arriving on the 9th. Here it was assigned to Briggs' Brigade of Casey's Division of Reserves and was stationed at Camp chase on Arlington Heights.

Transferred to Frederick, MD, Sept 30 and thence to downsville. It was there attached to Deven's Brigade, Couche's Division, 4th Corps, but served with and was later attached to the 6th Corps.
After an expedition to Hancock MD, and to Cherry Run Ford in October the regiment returned to Downsville marching thence to Berlin,MD, where it crossed the Potomac Nov 3 with the rest of the Army of the Potomac, Devens' Brigade now became a definite part of Newton's 3rd division, Franklin's 6th Corps. thanksgiving found the 37th at Stafford C.H. It's first battle experience was on the Union left at Fredericksburg, Dec 11 to 15, 1862. Here Devens'sBrigade led the advance in the crossing of the Rappahannock by Franklin's Corps on the11th, and covered the withdrawal of the corps on the night of the 15th.

During the battle on the 13th the 37th was not heavily engaged. The winter of 1862 was spent in camp near White Oak Church about three miles cast ofFalmouth. In January, 1863, the regiment participated in Burnside's "Mud March," after which it returned to its former camp.

On May 3, 1863, the 37th, now a part of Browne's Brigade, Newton's division, participated in the capture of Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg, and later the same day and on the following day was in action with the 6th Corps near Salem Church, in these two engagements losing 27 men wounded, two fatally. As a part of Eustis' 2nd Brigade, Wheaton's 3rd Division it participated in the forced march of the 6th Corps fromManchester to Gettysburg on the night of the first and morning of thesecond day of July, 1863, covering 35 miles in less than 18 hours andarriving on the field on the afternoon of the 2nd just as the close of the fighting on the Union left. FRANCIS MUSTERED OUT HERE JULY 7TH1863.

On the 3rd the regiment suffered severely from shell fire while beingshifted from one point to another in the rear of the line.

Early in August the 37th was sent to New York City to assist in the enforcement of the draft. In October it rejoined the Army of the Potomac near Chantilly, VA and on Nov 4 was in the supporting line at the capture of Rappahannock Station. During the closing days of November it participated in the Mine Run Campaign, then went into winter quarters near Brandy Station.

Early on the morning of May 4, 1864, the regiment broke camp at Brandy Station and started for the Wilderness. It now formed a part of Eustis' 4th Brigade of Getty's 2nd Division, Sedgwick's 6th Corps. Nearmidday May 5 Getty's division was hurried to the junction of the Brack and Plank roads arriving just in time to save that important point from falling into the hands of the advancing Confederates. On the following day the 37th was very heavily engaged on the right of the Plankroad losing 34 men killed outright and over 100 wounded, about 20 of those mortally.

At Spottsylvania on the 8th, 10th, 12th, and 18th of May the regimentwas engaged, having an especially severe experience on the 12th when it assisted in supporting Hancock's assault near the Bloody Angle. During this period the 37th lost 32 men killed or mortally injured together with about twice as many surviving wounded. Here Col. Edwards commanded the 4th Brigade and Lt. Col. Montague the regiment. The regiment was prsent at the operations on the North Anna River, May 23 to 25,but suffered no loss. During the fighting near Cold Harbor, June 1 to 12 the 37th lost 6 killed and 23 wounded, several fatally. Lt. Col. Montague having been disabled at Spottsylvania, May 12, Lt. Col. Harlow of the 7th Mass. Regt. commanded the 37th unitl the close of Coldharbor operations.

On June 15 the regiment recieved 78 recruits form the 7th Regiment and that night crossed the James, arriving on the 17th in sight of the spires of Petersburg. Here it remained until July 9, suffering frequent losses. It then accompanied the 6thCorps to wash9ington to assist in driving back the Confederates under Gen. Early who was threatening the city. It now formed a part of Edwards' 3rd Brigade, Russell's 1stDivision, General Wright now commanding the corps, General Sedgwick having been killed at Spottaylvania. On Sept 14, the regiment was armedwith Spencer, seven shot repeating rifles.

After pursuing Early as far as Snicker's Ferry on the Shenandoah, the 6th corps returned toward Washington, only to be again sent to the Valley of the Shenandoah by way of Harper's Ferry and assigned to the command of Gen. Philip H Sheridan. Under his command the 37th was engaged in the operations of the late summer and fan, participating in the battle of Charles Town, Aug 21 and that of winchester, Sept 19, losing in these two engagements a total of 20 killed and 95 wounded, several of the latter mortally.

About Dec 15, 1864, the 37th returned to Petersburg lines and was stationed near Fort Wadsworth on the Weldon Railroad. It skirmished at Hatcher's Run, Feb 5, 1865, made an advance near Fort Fisher, March 25 and participated in the general assault on the Petersburg lines, April2. It entered Petersburg next morning, but rejoined the 6th Corps about noon and started in pursuit of General Lee's army. Since March 25, Captain Archibald Hopkins had commanded the regiment.

At sailor's Creek, April 6, it assisted in the defeat and dispersion of Ewell's Corps, and the capture of Generals Ewell, Kershaw, and custis Lee. Here 9 members of the 37th were killed and 31 wounded, several mortally. Captain Hopkins recieved the brevet of major for his services at Petersburg, and that of Lieutenant colonel for his conduct atSailor's Creek.

Continuing the pursuit to the vicinity of Appomattox C.H., after the surrender of Lee's army the regiment was ordered to Burkeville, thenceto Danville, and again back to Wilson's Station on the Southside Railroad. Returning to Washington, it participated in the Grand Review, May 24, and four weeks later was mustered out of the service, its recruits and re-enlisted men having been transferred to the 20th Regiment.Returning to Massachusetts, on the 2nd day of July the regiment was assembled for the last time at Readville where its members were paid off and discharged...
Regiment lost during service 4 Officers and 165 Enlist4ed men killed and mortally wounded and 92 Enlisted men to disease. Total of 261.

(Research):Greetings, Dominic:
Well, apparently I've hit a brick wall as well. I have no Amos D. Kenyon nor Lucy Mason Hubbard in my listings. I do have several Hubbards that may be from her first marriage if she was first married to a Francis. A Hubbard (for which I have a wife of Lucy M. listed, but individual listing for her), all of which are in the Otis Center Cemetery. Francis died in 1867 in Monterey, Mass. and is buried in the Otis CenterCemetery. If you'd like those listings, just let me know. If Lucy wasborn in Chester, she may be buried there, and since that's not in Berkshire County I haven't covered that town (yet!).
I also have no Levi M. Hubbard either nor his daughter Annie. While the Sheffield Ctr. Cemetery is relatively well taken care of, I do recall there being some broken stones as well as some illegible ones, so it may be one of those.
As for the Kenyons in Otis, I have several in the Otis Center Cemetery, but none matching your Amos. There is one cemetery in Otis that I have been unable to locate (I believe it is in some deep woods on private property). It may well be the case that he is there.
Sorry to not be able to help further. :-(
Best wishes,
John P. Fox

Greetings, Dominic:

Here's what I have for Francis & Lucy M. Hubbard's families:

Hubbard, Francis A 1822 - 9/19/1867; m. Lucy M; d. Monterey,

Hubbard, Eunice M, 1844 - 5/11/1866; dau. Francis A/Lucy M; d. Otis.

Hubbard, Frederick F, 4/18/1859 - 11/21/1860; son Francis A/Lucy M

Hubbard, Lucy; no info given or legible on stone

Hubbard, Willie; no info given or legible on stone

All of the above are in the Otis Ctr. Cemetery (Rt. 23, Otis), front section.

No listing for a Lucy M. Hubbard.

Would it be possible that they also had a Francis W? If so, his dates are 1844-1910, and his wife Mary (Canfield), 1854 - 1910; dau. of Henry W & Rhoda (Callender) Canfield; Francis & Mary are bur. SheffieldCtr. Cemetery. My records include parental relationships wherever possible, so I can trace some lines back a fair distance.

I also have Kenyons in the Otis Ctr. Cemetery, birth dates 1781 - 1822 if you'd like those as well. And, if you're planning on coming up to do some research, I have a volume which gives the location of everycemetery in Massachusetts (well, at least approximate locations in some cases).

It's my pleasure and privilege to assist in any way possible. When Istarted doing this little "hobby" of mine in 1998 back where I used to live in Mass., little did I know it would become my weekend/summertime/vacation (I'm a teacher) "obsession" leading up to over 140 cemeteries catalogued and over 100,000 folks entered. Trouble is, I never knew what to do with it....so I put out that I had these records, and Iam always gratified when I am able to give someone some information that they are seeking. Something keeps me going back and cataloguing....perhaps it's God's way of giving me some other way to give back to His people.

And, if you come up and find where Amos D. Kenyon is, I'd like to know the location of the cemetery. Maybe it's the one I could never find.

Best wishes,

Sarah Pratt Hubbard was born November 1, 1829, in East Hadden, Connecticut, the daughter of Matthew and Wentley (Smith) Hubbard. The 1850 census for Gallatin, Tennessee, listed Sarah as single and living with the Ezra Clark family.

I could not trace down the reason why Sarah was in Tennessee at the time. It was known that her father was still living in East Haddam, Connecticut, in 1870. He was living with his second wife, Maria; although, they may have been living in New York when Sarah left for Tennessee.
Were the Clark's relatives?
Was she a servant or hired hand?
Was she boarding there while she was employed elsewhere?
While in Gallatin, Tennessee, she met and married William McClane on December 28, 1852. William was born June 12, 1828 in Pennsylvania.
