On 11/12/1862 Isaac traveled from Rosendale to Milton and enlisted in the Union Army for a period of nine months. He mustered into CompanyE of the 176 Infantry on 18 Dec 1862. Isaac was captured in action on 23 June 1863 with most of his regiment at Brashear City and became a prisioner of war. He was released on June 24-29, and returned to duty on 17 Aug 1863. He was mustered out on 11 Nov 1863 at New York City. Isaac enlisted with his brother-in-law, Frederick Sulkey, on January 15, 1864 in Ulster County. He gave his age as 20 years, 6 mos. Born in Marbleton, NY. Enlisted for 3 years. He signed his enlistment with an "X", and spelled his name as Fitzjerel. Isaac was mustered into the 15th New York Heavy Artillery on 16 Jan 1864. You may have just hit the jackpot regarding the Fitzgerald line from New York State. There are a few discrepancies, but enough matches that I am convinced we are related. My great-great grandfather was Isaac Fitzgerald (born September 1842-1844 in Rosendale Township, NY vs Greenfield, NY). He married Hannah Elizabeth Hill (vs. Matilda Hill)(born Marbleton, Ulster County, NY) I know of eight of their children, and an additional child from Isaac's second marriage. All of Isaac's and Hannah's children were born in Rosendale Township. I have them born as follows: 1865-1867, June 1866, December 1868, 1871-1872, 1872-1873, August 1874, 1875-1876 and 1879. I suspect your Sydney W. born December 1870 is my William Fitzgerald born December 1868, who married an Eliza (Last Name Unknown) in 1889. I suspect my Eliza is your Elizabeth Freer. Williamwas listed as 12 in the 1880 census and there was no Sydney listed. In the 1900 census, William, listed as born December 1868 and Eliza (born August 1868) had two children, one of which was Isaac Fitzgerald born December 1890, who I suspect is your grandfather. It seems you and I have different source material. Where did you get information regarding Isaac being born in Greenfield, NY and his wife being Matilda vs. Hannah Elizabeth? Also, what is your source for "Sydney"? I have a substantial amount of information of Isaac and Hannah Elizabeth Hill. Their parents, siblings, extensive information on their children, Isaac's civil war records. I have visited cemeteries and know where Isaac is buried along with some of his children and other relatives. By the way, where is Ellenville and what is the family connection? As promised I am sending you my narrative of the Civil War Service of Isaac Fitzgerald. I have copies of all of his records still held by NARA and have included other information found in Civil War history books. This is still a work in progress. You'll notice that I still haven't reserached the engagements of Company L, 2nd U.S. Artillery. Although Isaac states that he originally enlisted at the age of 19, I really believe that he may have been younger. Most of the civil war veterans of the township of Rosendale joined one of three local regiments: 156th New York State Volunteers (15 men - all enlisting in 1862), 120th Regiment (12 men - enlisting at various times 1860 - 1865) and 80th New York State Volunteers (82 men - enlisting at various times 1860-1865)(Dominic- including a George Vanwager). Only 8 Rosendale residents enlisted into different regiments, including Fritz Sulkey and Isaac Fitzgerald. Why did Isaac travel to Milton to enlist instead ofdoing so locally? I don't think it was a time issue because of the various dates of enlistment in the local regiments. It wasn't a preference for the artillery, although I suspect that was the reason Fritz enlisted and Isaac re-enlisted later in the artillery. I believe that the local recruiters knew Isaac to be underage and therefore he traveled to Milton where he wouldn't be recognized. Whether he was 17, 18 or 19, he was still very young. In reading my narrative you'll see that at one time he was in confinement at a Union garrison in Louisiana, reasons unknown, and he was later accused of stealing another man's pistol, although apparently never found guilty. E-mail me if you have any questions: Civil War Military Service On November 8, 1862, President Lincoln made a politically safe decision and assigned Major General Nathaniel Banks to the command of the Department of the Gulf. Banks, a Massachusetts politician who was in thefield for 18 months without a single tactical victory, was charged with the formidable task of opening the Mississippi River and then cutting off all connections between the Northern Mississippi and Atlanta. To do this he was given 20,000 reinforcements to accompany him on the coastalvoyage to New Orleans, including one expeditionary force sailing from New York. At the age of 19 Isaac Fitzgerald traveled from Rosendale to Milton where he enlisted on December 11, 1862 for a period of nine months. He mustered in as a private in Company E of the 176th New York Infantry on December 18, 1862. The regiment, referred to as Ironsides or the Monitor, was officially designated on December 22 and left New York as part of Bankís expeditionary force on January 11, 1863 enroute to New Orleans. In Louisiana, it served in the defense of New Orleans from February 1863, and then in the 1st Division of the 19th Corps in March and April 1863. Isaac was absent from muster at the end of April 1863 due to confinement at Thibodaux, Louisiana for reasons unknown. He returned to his company some time within the following several weeks. The regiment returned to duty on the defense of New Orleans in May 1863. The entire regiment was involved in skirmishes at Pattersonville, LA on June 17 - 19, with one casualty, and a detachmant of the regiment, most probably not including Company E, was lead by Major Morgan and saw action at La Fourche Crossing on June 19 - 21. The Confederates, determined to break Union supply lines and force their withdrawal from Brashear City and Port Hudson, marched from Washington, LA under Colonel Major, conducting raids on Union forces, boats and plantations while capturing animals, supplies and liberated slaves. Union Lt. Col. Stickney was assigned to command in Brashear City and to stem the Rebel raid. When ordered to send troops to meet Major at La Fourche Crossing, Stickney, feeling that no threat to Brashear City existed, lead the troops himself, arriving at about 6 a.m. on June 20. That afternoon the enemy rapidly advanced and began driving in Stickneyís pickets at 5 p.m.. The Confederate calvary then advanced, but Uniontroops, hidden in the grass, fired upon them, causing the Rebels to withdraw in the direction of Thibodaux. After reinforcing during the night, the Union forces were well protected and were successful in holding the field the next day, repelling the Confederates after several hours of fighting and artillery duels during the late afternoon andevening. The Confederated disengaged and retired toward Thibodaux with Colonel Majorís raiders continuing on the Brashear City. >From June 20 -24 various companies were involved in different actions throughout the region. Company E was involved in the action and subsequent surrender of Brashear City on June 23 - 24. At Brashear City, now named Morgan City, the Union Army suffered 46 killed, 40 wounded andover 300 missing or captured. The Confederated suffered minimal loses of 3 killed and 18 wounded. Certainly the decision of Lt. Col. Stickney to lead the troops to La Fourche, minimizing the defenses of Brashear City, and the continued reinforcement of his army at that location, contributed significantly to the lopsided casualties and the fall of Brashear City. Isaac was captured in action on June 23, 1863 with most ofhis regiment at Brashear City and became a prisoner-of-war. He and other members of the regiment were paroled June 24 - 29 and were returned to duty by order of General Banks on August 17, 1863. The time between parole and return to duty was probably spent traveling under Confederate control to an appropriate location for a POW exchange with the Union forces. The nine month recruits were mustered out on November 16, 1863 at New York City. The remaining forces of the 176th didnít see action again until March 1864.Isaac, at home only about 2 months, re-enlisted, with his brother-in-law, Frederick Sulkey, on January 15, 1864 in Ulster County, at the declared age of 20 years, 6 months, bornin Marbleton, New York, to serve 3 years. His physical characteristics were recorded as 5' 9" with dark eyes, hair and complexion. His occupation was listed as sailor or canalier. His name on the enlistment paper was spelt "Fitzjerel" and he signed with his mark "X". The 15th New York Heavy Artillery was organized in New York City and began recruiting on September 30, 1863. Isaac was mustered into the 15th NY HeavyArtillery the next day, January 16, 1864, in Kingston, New York. Company M was formed in Goshen, New York on January 30, 1864. The original companies were initially assigned duty at Fort Lyons, Virginia with the other companies forwarded to that location upon formation. When Isaac joined the regiment, it was serving as infantry and heavy artillery in DeRussyís Division, 22nd Corps. Then, commencing in March 1864, the regiment served in the Artillery Reserve, Artillery Park, and the Heavy Artillery Brigade, 5th Corps, of the Army of the Potomac. On April 13, 1864 Isaac was temporarily assigned to the Horse Battery of Company L, 2nd U.S. Light Horse Artillery. He remained on this assignment until April 30, 1865. Upon his return to Company M, 15th NY Heavy Artillery after the end of the war, the company was assigned to the Artillery Brigade, 5th Corps. The entire regiment returned to DeRussyís Division, 22nd Corps in June 1865. All of the engagements that the 15th NY Heavy Artillery took part in occurred between May 5, 1864 and April 9, 1865, when Isaac was on detached assignment to Company L, 2nd U.S. Artillery. Engagements of the 2nd U.S. Artillery during his period of service are as follows: During his duty with Company L, 2nd U.S. Artillery, he was charged with the dishonest possession of the revolver of a fellow private while at City Point, Virginia on or about July 26th, 1864. Nine months later, on March 29, 1865, his case was referred to a General Courts Martial. The fact that he was discharged with his company would indicate that he was probably acquitted or the charges were dismissed. Alternatively, the fact that his case was referred just 11 days before the end of the warmay have impacted its' disposition. The entire regiment, including Private Isaac Fitzgerald, was musteredout on August 22, 1865 at Washington, D. C. Parents: Morris FITZGERALD and SarahFlora CARNEY. Spouse:

Source: RFPeters Regarding the baptismal records at St. Peters. I stopped in at the rectory and spoke to the secretary. She mentioned that there wasa man donating time at their office researching and that all requestsmust be through him. She refused to let me look at the records. I didn't want to ask for too much research at first and so just requested any information on Isaac Fitzgerald. The reseracher, however, had done prior research on Fitzgerald for Ed Fitzgerald who we werein contact with last year, and sent me two pages of baptismal records, marriages and internments. I will make copies and send you both a copy of the research. The researcher was John Carroll, 778 Springtown Road, Tillson, NY 12486 (914) 658-9201. I suspect that all research requests need to go through the parish office, but you can call him and ask what the proper procedure is. The phone number for St. Peters office is (914) 658-3117. Regarding your question on the correct family group: I have Morris Fitzgerald in the 1855 census like you, but also have the remaining family members in the 1860 and 1865 censuses. By 1855, Morris had apparently died and Sarah/Flora had remarried William Brown. Fitzgerald is misspelled, but it was misspelled on Isaac's civil war records, but the children, William, Catherine, Isaac, Margaret and Ellen match up in the precise order with close ages. Also it states thatthey are all Flora's children from a previous marriage. In 1860, onlyIsaac and Ellen are still at home and they are erroneously listed as Brown. The Browns can probably be found in later censuses, but all of the Fitzgerald children would be grown by then, [635] Morris Fitzgerald and Family 1850Census: Rosendale, Ulster County, NY: Morris Fitzgerald, 40, born Ireland, laborer; Sarah Fitzgerald, 35, born NY; John Fitzgerald, 15, boatman, born NY; William Fitzgerald, 12, born NY; Catherine Fitzgerald, 8, born NY; Isaac Fitzgerald, 4, born NY; Margaret Fitzgerald, 3, born NY; Ellen Fitzgerald, 1, born NY. 1855 New York: Rochester, Ulster County, NY: William Brown, 38, boatman, born in England, married; Flora Brown, 40, wife, born in Ulster County; residents of Rochester for 3 months; William Fitzgerrels, 15; Catherine Fitzgerrels, 13; Isaac Fitzgerrels, 11; Margaret Fitzgerrels, 8; Ellen Fitzgerrels, 5; all wife's children and all born in Ulster County. 1860Census: Rosendale, Ulster County, NY: William Brown, 40, boatman, born NY, $100 personal estate; Laura Brown, 45, born NY; Isaac Brown (Fitzgerald), 18, laborer, born NY; Ellen Brown (Fitzgerald), 12, born NY; Stephen Brown, 4, born NY. Also information tending to confirm that Isaac and your Margaret were brother and sister: On May 17, 1887 Dennis Leehive married Laura Mary Fitzgerald. I know for a fact based upon direct family input that Laura Mary Fitzgerald was a sister of Fannie Fitzgerald and a daughter of Isaac. Per info from St. Peters, the wedding was witnessed by Mary Sulkey. Also regarding Isaac's and Margaret's younger sister, Ellen. I believe she married Robert Douglas. There was another Ellen Fitzgerald that was not our family. Ellen Fitzgerald Douglas is buried close to John Fitzgerald, her older brother, and was born May 1849 coinciding with the census data. Census information on the Douglas family follows: [647] Robert Douglas and Family 1880: (Vol. 99, ED 148, Sheet 36, Line 49) Rosendale, Ulster County, NY: Robert Douglass, 31, born in New York, parents born in Ireland, cooper; Ellen Douglass, 30, wife, born in New York, father born in Ireland, mother born in New York; James Douglass, 7, son, born in NY; John Douglass, 4, son, born in NY; Jennie Douglass, 1, daughter, born in NY. 1900: (Vol. 247, ED 127, Sheet 14, Line 62) Rosendale, Ulster County, NY: Robert Douglas, 51, born August 1848 in New York, both parents born in Ireland, cooper at cement works, rents house, can read, but can't write; Ellen (Fitzgerald) Douglas, 51, born May 1849 in New York, father born in Ireland, mother born in New York, illiterate; James Douglas, 28, born May 1872 in New York, cooper at cement works; Mary Douglas, 25, daughter-in-law, born June 1874 in New York, both parents born in New York; Roscoe Douglas, 1, grandson, born May 1899 in New York. Fitzgerald note: Mary E. Baker was the second wife of Isaac Fitzgerald and is buried with him. Information from her death record follows: [172] Town of Rosendale register #1166: Mary E. Baker Fitzgerald died on May 27, 1896 in Rosendale Plains at the age of 50 years, 3 months, 21 days of carcinoma of the pancreas. She was married, a housekeeper and was born in Marbletown, New York. Her father was John F. Baker, born in Rochester, New York. Her mother was Catherine Baker, born in Marbletown, New York. The attending physician was Dr. H. C. Keator. She was buried in Plains Cemetery. Isaac and Mary E. had a child John who died in childhood. Right near their unmarked garve is a marker: John, son of Isaac and Mary E.Fitzgerald, born June 9, 1886, died April 11, 1889. I have been unable to find the grave of Hannah Elizabeth Hill Fitzgerald. Unfortunately all the records of Rosendale Plains Cemetery were stolen years ago, but only3 of the 4 record volumes were returned or recovered. So the cemetery book source for Rosendale Plains is only 75% complete at best. Information on other children of Isaac: Fannie - married Henry Feiss and moved to the Bronx, died November 4,1917 (per death certificate). Mary Laura - married Dennis Leehive in 1887 (St. Peters records), died 1935 (gravestone). William - Luther - died May 5, 1899 (NARA Index to NY deaths). Inda - death unknown. Isaac Edward - born August 11, 1874, died November 2, 1878 (gravestone). This Isaac born and died between censuses. George - death unknown. Isaac - a second Isaac not included in your records, born 1879 per census of 1880. Below is an excerpt from my records. The numbers, such as [635] below, are my own catalog numbers. Isaac Fitzgerald's father was Morris Fitzgerald. His mother was either Sarah, Flora or Laura and I suspect, based upon information from Susan Zates, that her maiden name was Carney. Morris was alive during the 1850 U.S. census, but apparently had died prior to 1855 as his wife is remarried to William Brown in the 1855 NY census. You'll find many misspellings of the Fitzgerald name as shown in the 1855 N.Y. census. In the 1860 census, the children are listed as Brown. The Fitzgeralds written in parentheses are my notes of what the name should be. Hannah Elizabeth Hill is the daughter of James Hill and Frances Stuler, born in England. Census information on the family is provided below. She is listed as Elizabeth or Hannah E. Hill. She had a half brother, William Milligan, from her mother's previous marriage. A transcript of James Hill's death certificate was provided by the Rosendale Clerk's Office. He was born @1816 in New Rochelle - and his mother, Elizabeth, was also born in New Rochelle! My efforts to find out more about the Hills from New Rochelle have been unfruitful so far. [174] Town of Rosendale register #1576: James H. Hill died on December 25, 1899 in the Town of Rosendale at age 83 years, 4 months 26 days of chronic bronchitis. He was married and was born in New Rochelle. His mother was Elizabeth Hill, born in New Rochelle. Attending physician was Dr. W. E. E. Little. He is buried in Rosendale Cemetery. Hannah Elizabeth Hill's mothers maiden name, Frances Stuler, comes from her brother James' death certificate [transcript provided by Rosendale Clerk's Office]. [173] Town of Rosendale register #9: James H. Hill died on October7, 1926 in the Village of Rosendale at age 77 years, 5 months 29 days of chronic nephritis complicated by arterio scoloris. He was married, retired and was born in Ulster County, New York. His father was James Hill, born in New York State. His mother was Fannie Stuler, born in England. The attending physician was Dr. L. C. Rymph. The funeral director was G. Schulder & Sons. He was buried in Rosendale Plains Cemetery.
